Memo to Gorzelanny: It’s On!

Posted by dannmckeegan on April 17, 2010

TO: Tom Gorzelanny, LHP & provisional SP

FROM: Throw It Like a Ballplayer, Nascent Readership-Lacking Blog

SUBJECT: Structural Reorganization

Let it be brought to your attention that T.R. Lilly, SP, is close to returning from the absence caused by his recent shoulder surgery.  Upon rehabilitation he will resume his role as a starting pitcher with the Chicago Cubs.  There are five full-time positions in the department, but Mr. Lilly’s return will create an overstaffing issue.  Management will be looking at performance over the next week to determine who will be retained as a full-time member of this staff.

Messrs. Lilly, Zambrano and Dempster are long-time veterans of the league who will lead this rotation for the remainder of the season and, hopefully, into the playoffs.  Mr. Wells has also distinguished himself over the past full season and has a strong hold on the fourth of five departmental positions.  Mr. Silva, RHP, and yourself are, thus, competing for the fifth (5th) and final permanent position in our department.  Your first start and the first two of Mr. Silva have been nothing short of outstanding, and we would like to congratulate you for this early effort.  With your start today against Houston, we recognize the difficulty of a head-to-head matchup with Roy Oswalt.  Oswalt has long been one of the Central regions toughest competitors and has excelled in the Texas region for nearly a decade.  We’d also bring to your attention that a win today would put us at a success rate of greater than 50% for the first time this year.  It’s a goal we’d like to hit and subsequently maintain.

ACTION: Take the mound today and excel.  Note the exceptional starts of Mr. Silva as well as yourself:

9 APR @ CIN 6 3 1 1 0 3 L, 5-4
16 APR v HOU 7 5 2 0 0 5 W, 7-2
SILVA, C. totals: 13 8 3 1 0 8 1 W, 0 L, team rec. 1-1
11 APR @ CIN 6.1 4 1 0 2 7 L, 3-1
GORZELANNY, T. totals: 6.1 4 1 0 2 7 0 W, 0 L, team rec. 0-1

As you see, Mr. Silva’s strong performance matches yours. Therefore we must urge you to continue with what you’ve been doing and aim for even better results. As you can imagine, management appreciates the creation of such high-quality problems as the one with which we are currently presented in re: starting pitching. Best of luck.
